The next time we litter the city streets or dump garbage irresponsibly, Aliyeh Rizvi asks you to spend a minute thinking of the people who spend their lives keeping the city clean.
There’s a young man standing in the truck at the end of the lane. Nothing unusual about it except that the truck is not filled with fruit, vegetables, or even junk. He’s standing in a mound of garbage. He has no uniform. No gloves, shoes or protective gear. But, he seems fine. He smiles.

Bangalore! The Garden City. The tag has almost become an Irony. Its not that gardens are not there. But, The mess of the garbage has, over the past few years, been towering over the gardens. Every day early in the morning if one goes out for a walk one can see the BBMP employees cleaning the mess and making the city look clean(er). But, you return in a couple of hours on the same road and you'll have the funny feeling that you were dreaming when you saw the BBMP woman Cleaning the road.

Project Vruksha, an eco-initiative by Sattva Welfare Association, aims to estimate and preserve the urban tree population in Bangalore with the help of Bangaloreans. To this end, they are conducting a scientific street-wise census that measures the girth, exact location and condition of trees. They alsoor if the tree belongs to a rare species, etc. This data is then mapped through GPS and is overlaid on Google Earth and placed on the portal, www.vruksha.com.

It was another case of citizens’ groups giving a jolt to the city’s civic bodies. The Whitefield Resident Welfare Association took a collective decision in October (2010) to take the bull by the horns; they decided to meet the Municipal Corporation collectively and question them about the corruption ridden khata renewal process.
