Club Speak: “Charity begins at home…”

A club member of St Joseph’s College of Commerce talks about how the club changed her outlook to life.

India is a country of diversities and is known for its distinct culture and tradition. Our rich heritage is one point which makes us stand a step ahead of others.

But what we youngsters are really proud of is the fact that India is one of the biggest democracies in the world today and definitely the one with maximum number of citizens.

Democracy is an ideal platform which belongs to the people, for the people and is by the people. However, not many of us try to excise this power. We don’t care who our elected representative is and how he/she got elected.

This is where we need a platform to spread awareness about active citizenship—about being involved in the governance of one’s community. It is in this context that I feel the Jaagte Raho! club is relevant. Now we in our college had a formal platform to work towards urban transformation and greater civic and political engagement amongst our peers and friends.

I and nine other girls like me, all from St Joseph’s College of Commerce, decided to do something about our weary democracy. We volunteered for and launched a Jaagte Raho! club in our college. Our club's goal or target was to create awareness about voting and voter registration in our college. To do so, we did a series of activities. Firstly we conducted a baseline survey on 180 students of our college. We were surpised by the results: More than 38 per cent in our college were not registered as voters. To counter this, we conducted a drive in our college to encourage and help our peers to register to vote. We were amazed at the huge response and interest our peers showed. Here is our survey result:

As well said “charity begins at home”. We started from our college, got inspired and now have decided to work outside too to bring about change. Though there is a lot to do, we are proud to say that now we have done something towards building a better society.
